Green 02: Permeable Pavers

Read

In 2011, Naper Settlement installed over 42,000 square feet of environmentally friendly, permeable pavers to help purify rainwater that will eventually enter the DuPage River Watershed. Before installing the pavers, a layer of gravel is laid. The pavers are then placed on top of this bed of gravel, with additional gravel filled in between each paver. When it rains, the water seeps through the gravel on the sides of the permeable pavers, and then the bed of gravel underneath acts as a filter, removing impurities before the water enters local water sources. Improving the quality of the water that eventually drains into the river and streams restores the river and provides an ecologically balanced environment for plant and animal life.
